Jaguanana Lathan, Ed.D.
Jaguanana Lathan, Ed.D. —affectionately known as “Dr. Jag”—serves as the President of the Antioch Unified School District Board of Education, where she is a tireless advocate for equity, excellence, and opportunity for every student. Her mission as a trustee is clear: ensure that all children—regardless of race, income, ability, language, gender, or zip code—receive a high-quality, affirming education that prepares them for a thriving future.
In her role on the school board, Dr. Jag noticed a gap: few community events centered on STEM learning that were joyful, inclusive, and accessible to all. To change that, she partnered with friend and colleague Dr. Leena Bakshi to imagine In Living Color: A Hands-On STEM Community Event in May 2024. The vision was simple but powerful—create a space where children and families could explore science, technology, engineering, and math through play, creativity, and real-world connection.
What started as a local initiative has grown into a signature annual event, welcoming hundreds of youth and families, and dozens of partners who share a commitment to STEM equity and community joy.
Beyond her board service, Dr. Jag is the Founder and CEO of New Generation Equity, where she leads the organization’s day-to-day vision, strategy, and partnerships. New Generation Equity works alongside schools, districts, and education-focused organizations to strengthen systems and create the conditions for students, families, and educators to thrive. Drawing on her experience as a special education and general education teacher, school leader, and county office of education executive leader, Dr. Jag brings a deep understanding of instructional leadership and systems change. Her work centers on leadership coaching, team development, and the design and implementation of programs that support meaningful, sustainable impact.
