Mindy Capes, Ph.D.
Dr. Mindy Capes is a passionate educator, STEM advocate, and faculty advisor at Los Medanos College, where she is deeply committed to increasing access, equity, and success in STEM education. With a background in biochemistry, Dr. Capes teaches General, Organic, and Allied Health Chemistry courses, ensuring that her instruction is not only rigorous but also inclusive, accessible, and relevant to the diverse needs of today’s students.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Capes serves as the faculty advisor for two powerful student programs: MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) and WinS (Women in STEM). Through these initiatives, she supports community college students—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—as they pursue academic and professional pathways in STEM. Her mentorship and leadership have helped countless students build confidence, develop essential skills, and persist in fields where they are often underrepresented.
Dr. Capes believes deeply in the power of early exposure to STEM as a catalyst for long-term success. That’s why she extends her efforts beyond the college campus to K–12 students and families throughout the community. She works to ensure students are well-prepared for STEM coursework at the college level and sees community-based events like STEM In Living Color as critical touchpoints for sparking curiosity and showing students that science and innovation are for everyone.
Through her work, Dr. Capes champions a vision where all students—regardless of gender, background, or socioeconomic status—feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive in STEM. Whether she’s mentoring future engineers, designing inclusive lab experiences, or connecting with families at community events, she brings a tireless dedication to equity, excellence, and student success.
Dr. Capes sees STEM not just as a field of study—but as a pathway to opportunity and a tool for justice. Her leadership continues to open doors and expand possibilities for the next generation of changemakers.
